Keloid scars are a type of raised, thickened scar that forms as a result of an overactive response to injury or trauma. They are typically characterised by a firm, rubbery texture and can be red, pink, or purple in colour. Keloid scars can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly appear on the ears, chest, shoulders, and back. Common causes are surgery, acne, piercings, or burns. Genetics and ethnicity play a part in the disposition of keloid scarring. Hypertrophic scarring is similar to keloid scarring but unlike keloid scars, they rarely protrude more than 4mm from the skin surface. Keloid scars can be painful or itchy and people often find their scars unsightly causing self-esteem and other mental health issues. Surgical removal of a keloid scar will often cause another keloid scar to form.
Panacea Skin Clinic offers a series of intralesional injections of the steroid Triamcinolone Acetonide. This treatment aims to improve the look of the scar but will not get rid of it completely. Each treatment uses a small amount of steroid so the risks of side effects are extremely low. Treatment sessions need to be 3-6 weeks apart to allow for the full effect of the treatment to be monitored.
